A brief family tree as I know it. Sources are certificates, parish records, and census reports. Please bear with me, as I'll be adding little and often.
Catherine Roberts (born c1769?), spinster pauper, gave birth to SAMSON ROBERTS, who was baptised 19/04/1789 in Faversham. I have a photocopy of the baptism entry.
Samson married or lived with Jane Sharwood (may be Sherwood?), and bore 11 children that I know of. They were: Samson 1811, Adam 1814 (infant death), Jane 1818, Ruth 1819, Naomi 1820, Eve 1823, Emma 1825, Esau 1827, Elias 1829, Adam 1830, and Barbara 1833. Notes: On 1841 St Leonards, Kent census with wife, and children: Adam, Barbara, Elias, Emma, Esau, Jane, Naomi, and Ruth. Died of a fever on 17/02/1843, his son Esau reg'd the death, and was in attendance when Samson died. I cannot see any of Samsons family on the 1851 census. On daughter Barbara's marriage cert, Samson was a soldier.
Samson born 1811 married Mary Bexell, a hawker, in Hollingbourne 1843. They had 6 children that I know of. They were: Palaty 1841, Jecoliah 1842, Samson 1844, Serug 1845, Nimrod 1851, and Timon 1854. Samson was a licensed brush hawker, who died in Hastings, 1899. Notes: Baptism date from IGI is 1811. Was in Woodchurch in 1841 when Jecholiah was born, she was baptised in Halden in 1842. Married in Hollingbourne, 1843. Was in Benenden in 1844 when son Samson was born. On 1851 census in Bethersden with wife, Palaty, Serug and Samson jr. Jecholiah not there. On 1861 census in Ashford Rd Turnpike, Shack Oak (looks like, may be Shick Oak), Tenterden. Was with wife, Jecholiah, Nimrod, Samson jr, Timan and Serug. Gypsies with the surname Barton were living nearby. Jecholiahs future husband lived nearby. On 1871 at Boars Isle, Tenterden, Kent. Mistranscribed as Samuel, with wife, Timan, Nimrod and Serug, it says Sampson's birth year was 1807. The Barton gypsies were still living nearby. Cant see family in 1881. On 1891 with wife in St Michaels, Tenterden, Kent. There is a large age gap between Samson and his siblings which Im not happy about. Was Samson's father married prior to Jane?
Jecoliah Roberts 1842: Baptised 05/06/1842 in Halden, Kent. Married William Coleman in Appledore, 07/03/1868. Had 2 sons that I know of, Charles 1869, and Ernest 1871. Was committed to Chartham asylum, died 1915 in Bridge, Kent. Notes: The IGI has her baptised as Jecoliah. Cant see on 1851 census. Mistranscribed as Jeckohah on 1861 census, with parents and living next door to her future husband. Married in 1868, bmd record says JEROLIAH. On 1871 census (as Tawliah) with husband and children at 4 West End, Appledore, Tenterden, Kent. On 1881 with husband & kids (as Jacobiah) living at Wall Rd, Appledore, Kent. A 2 yr old 'boarder' named Samuel Norman is living with them.(On the 1901 census, Samuel is living alone as an ag lab in Russell Place, Rye, Sussex). On 1891 in Chatham lunatic asylum! Need to find in 1901. Woodchurch census site gives name as Jecholiah. Death entry says Jecoliah.
Samson Roberts 1844 (son of Samson Roberts and Mary Bexell): A hawker, born Benenden, Kent. Married or lived with Matilda Elliott. They had 9 children that I know of: Henry 1863, Samson 1864, Mary Ann 1866, Celia 1868, Eliza 1869, Genty 1871, William 1873, Nancy 1874, and Phoebe 1876. Matilda died of pneumonia in winter 1881, and Samson remarried to Priscilla Beeney (who had been Priscilla Ripley at birth - she was widdowed). Samson & Priscilla's marriage took place in Eastbourne on 11/12/1882. Notes on Samson 1844: On 1851 & 61 with parents. Had first child in 1863 (cant find marriage). On 1871 census a Mary Brazil age 16 is living with Samson & Matilda in a caravan on North Trade Rd, Battle, Sussex. Possibly related, as Samsons daughter in law Mary Ann Clark's family camped with Brazil's, (On 1861 census she was with her parents John & Priscilla in a caravan in Leigh, Kent. Not Samson's 2nd wife Priscilla) and Samson's granddaughter Matilda married into the Brazil family. On 1881 with wife and kids at 2 Battle Rd, Hastings. Living next door were gypsies Thomas & Jane Brown and their son James. Matilda died that year, and Samson married Priscilla the following year. Samuel & Sarah Jones were witnesses. On 1891 living in Rose Place, St Mary in the Castle, Sussex with his 2nd wife and kids, birthplace says Stone, Kent. Samson's stepson Bobby was with them. In 1901 with Priscilla, and Robert Beney (stepson) living near his son William. *A Samson Roberts born 1908 died in 1995, Worthing Sussex. Related?
Samson Roberts 1864 (son of Samson Roberts and Matilda Elliott): A hawker, then a horse dealer. Samson married or lived with Mary Ann Clark born 1865. They had 12 children that I know of: Celia 1882, William 1886, James (Jim) 1888, Gentila 1890 (my great gran!!), Sarah 1892, Henry 1894, Harriet (Harty) 1894, Frederick 1898, Connie 1901 (infant death?), Teaman, Annie, and Elsie. They moved upto Aberkenfig, S Wales between 1901-1906. Samson died racing a horse in Cheltenham Terrace ('The Golden Mile'), Bridgend. Notes on Samson: On 1871 with parents, birthplace given as Hailsham, Sussex. On 1881 census with parents at 2 Battle Road, Hastings, Sussex. Birthplace given as Maidstone. Cant see on 1891. On 1901 at 198 Mount Pleasant Rd, Hastings, Sussex with wife and kids. Bought a cinema that was closing down in either Aberkenfig or Newport, and donated it to the local community on the condition it was never sold. Notes on Mary Ann Clark: 4'6 tall, shoe size was 2 and a half. Loved cooking and housework. Only liked boys as could earn money. Used to pinch the girls to make them cry, but apparently was a nice lady! Adored my dad. Used to discipline her kids with a horse whip! Lived with daughter Celia after Samson's death, they used to sit in Celia's garden peeling veg for the dinner. Died early 1950's, buried in Christchurch cemetery, Newport, Wales.
Samson Roberts and Mary Ann Clark's children: Celia married an Irish traveller named Timothy O'Shea. Cant see marriage but they had 3 children; Billy who emigrated, Ethel, and Grace. Harriet/Harty married Robert Henson in Newport, 1918 and had a son named Teaman. (Teaman married Maria Zalick). Gentila, my great gran, was a fortune teller who lived at Pleasant View, Brynmenyn, then Nolton St, Bridgend, then Corporation Rd, Newport. She married Percy Price and had 3 children - Percy, Rose, and Violet Ethel. After Percys death she married Edward Alun Edwards and ran a guest house in Newport with him and her sister Harty. Gentila died in 1966.
Family stories: Jim Roberts born 1888, son of Samson and Mary Ann. My 2nd cousin Rosemary said he had a bet with another man over who could wallpaper the room of the local pub with money. (Showing off who was richer!). Jim won, but his wife Agnes was a woman you didnt cross, so what she said when he arrived home, with all their money plastered on the walls of the pub is anyones guess.
Barbara Roberts 1833, daughter of Samson and Jane: Barbara was baptised in Stanford, Kent, on 16/06/1833. She married Henry Cannon in 1856, and bore 10 children that I know of. They were Amelia 1858, Harriet 1860-1941, Mary 1861, Charlotte 1863, Henry 1865, Naomi 1869-1947, Emma 1871, Eva 1873, Ruth 1874, and Walter 1880-1957. Barbara died at 7 Frith St, Buckland, Dover on 05/12/1886.
Adam Roberts 1830, son of Samson and Jane: Adam married Priscilla Frances Stone, who was a dealer in old clothes, in Canterbury on Boxing Day 1853. They had 10 children that I know of: Diana 1854, Priscilla 1856, Sarah 1858, Julia 1860, Barbara 1862, Mary 1864, Adam 1866, Emily 1873-1961, Elias 1878, and Alfred 1880. Adam was an ag labourer, then worked in a cement works. He died 17/08/1916 in Sittingbourne. Priscilla died in 1900, she too was Romany.
