Transportation of gypsies
many gypsies were transported from late 1700s to late 1800s.i wont say they were convicts because they were often transported for the simpliest of misdeamenires.they served 7 years or longer abroad and then provided they had not got a life sentence they could return to England.many chose to stay in their new land.many had the choice on being transported whether to take their wives and children with them.
Robert Birch was tried in the courts at Winchester in 1828 for horse thieving and sentenced to death.this was later commuted to 7 years transportation. His database no was 5022 and he was transported to Tasmania on the 01.09.1832 on a ship called York.He arrived in Tasmania on the 29.12.1832.He had left port at Plymouth but apart from his arrival in Tasmania i do not know what happened to him after.

Charged on the oath of Peter Pritchard with having on the 22nd June last at Cold Ashton, feloniously stealing a brown mare from a field, the property of Peter Pritchard. Black long hair, brown eyes, round visage, dark sallow complexion. 5'51/2". Occupation: Gypsy Tinker. Transported 10 years. I have a feeling he came back, as I think I've found him in later censuses...?? Need to investigate this one further.
