Hello
I found a website called Musical Traditions (www.mtrecords.co.uk). The company record traditional songs from around the country. They have a CD called 'Here's Luck to a Man: Gypsy Songs and Music from South-East England'. They also have a 3-CD set by the Brazil family of Gloucestershire. Thought you might be interested. Best wishes Angie

Hi
I am trying to find out whether one of my partner's ancestors was a gypsy. His name was William Riley Lee and he married Alice Ann Cotsford. I believe his father and mothers names were Riley and Rebecca. There were also 2 sisters, Rhoda and Selina and a brother called Michael. They came from Kensington. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hello All
My grandfather was Henry Norton Cooper, baptised in 1877 to Francis Cooper and Alice. Their abode is stated as Guildford and Francis´s occupation is horse dealer. My grandfather married in 1905 and states his father´s occupation as General Dealer. Francis and Alice Cooper are on the 1901 census living in Surbiton and are General Dealers. They appear to be the same Francis and Alice who are in Isleworth in 1891 in caravans but with occupation : travelling showman. I´ve also found Alice and Francis on the 1861 census in Walton, Surrey and their occupation there is basket maker. Unfortunately my grandfather Henry doesn´t show up on any census record. Francis´s birthdate on the census is approximately 1836/37 and the place he name´s is Cobham. What I am wondering is, is this Francis Cooper the son of Matty Cooper born in the grounds of Claremont House in the winter of 1836/37 or am I barking up the wrong tree? Regards David

Can anyone please help me find William Lane born abt 1816 in the 1841 or 1851 census??? In 1861 he was at Palmers Field in Wandsworth with his wife Rebecca and son Frederick and I can find him all the census after that. He did remarry Mary Ann Gardner nee Warne/Warner. I seem to come to a full stop with the 1841, 1851 census for all my romany threads and wonder if this is common for all the Romany travellers.
Thanks a lot Chellin

I have Celia or Cecilia Ripley born abt 1846, think her parents were George Ripley & Mary Ann Clements. She married Mathew Wheeler about 1864 at Withyham Kent.
1871 Census gives them living in caravan 2 Golding Street, Tunbridge Wells, with 3 children, daughter Nanny, son Mathew, daughter Mary-Ann. Mathew is a hawker. 1881 census living same place, with son Mathew, & daughter Mary-Ann. 1891 have moved to 36 Cambridge Road Tunbridge Wells, Mathew is now a horse dealer. They have more children,Lettie,Louisa,Harriet,May,Lily,& Henry. Harriet I think was my Greatgrand mother, She never used her real name as she didn't like it, called herself Nina, and married Galahad Huth 1907 I'm interested in any info about the Wheelers. Would like to trace the other children. Think some might have emmigrated to Canada. Also any conection to a family called Neaves or Neeves |

Hi there,
I'm looking for information about Britannia Lee/Draper/Gregory (????) - possibly my g-g-g-grandmother - and information about where she was born. Hopefully someone here will have some information which could help me. According to the 1881 census. Small Run Pond, Buckinghamshire, England. Does anyone know any information about this place or which other gypsies were there at the time? I'm also very interested to hear if anyone knows information regarding her marriage to Thomas Gregory and which children she had - especially interested in William Walter (or Walter William!) Does anyone know what her involvement with the draper family is? According to the marriage certificate I have, Thomas Gregory (whos father was John gregory the basket maker) married Britannia 'Draper' whos father was Shipton Draper. I can't find /ANY/ information about shipton draper at all. http://www.mikefranklin.me.uk/experiments/family/brit_and_thomas_gregory.jpg So many questions! I'm sorry! But this is a real mystery to us and I'd really love to get to the bottom of it. many thanks Mikee

Hi,
Does anyone know if Gilham is or could be a Romany surname? Whilst researching my gran's family, the Gilhams, I found an Annie Gilham who was born in 1880 in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire. She was living in Fareham, Hampshire in 1901 and was recorded as a hawker. Many thanks Angie |
