Tommy Lee and sister Ellen
Jun 1 2008, 5:06 PM EDT
For three years during the war our family lived in a flat above the Lee's in Ripley Rd,Custom House E16 while our fathers were away fighting,we suffered being bombed out while there and were very close friends
for many years after, but eventually lost touch with each other,I now wonder if they are around and maybe
some one knows of them?
Tom was the last time I heard an ambulance driver and had a wife called Glynn,Ellen's married name I
recall was Aldridge and used to live in or around Forest Gate.
They came from gypsy stock but I imagine not real followers of any of the traditions attached to this way of life!! not hopeful of any contact ,but one never knows ? Vic

Hi Vic

I know Nelly (Ellen) Aldridge nee Lee.

Her brother Tommy married Glenda Veal in 1959. I used to be in contact with Nelly's youngest daughter Karen, but haven't seen them for about 3 years, I don't have their email address now either.

They are distant cousins of mine. Tommy & Nellys G-Granddad Jimmy Toodley Lee was the brother of my g-g-granddad William Parrafin Lee.

....can I just ask, are you the same Vic that sometimes posts on the Newham Forum site?

Hi Sandra,
Thanks for informing me about Nelly and Tom,strange, but I knew someone on this site would know of them !
Shame that you have lost touch with them,? I would've liked to exchange a few old memories with them.
Yes Sandra, I do like to look into the Newham site to see what's going on,it can be quite entertaining some times and makes a change from watching TV, anything to do with the docks and I might make a comment, will probably go over there now.
No doubt if you get to hear anything of Tom and Nellie you will let me know?
Again,many thanks Vic

Hi Vic
I often post on the Newham site about my gypsy Lee family who lived on Cherry Island. - now the Kier Hardy Estate.

Mum was born in Canning Town (Woodstock Street) and lived in Plaistow. I was brought up in East Ham, but now live in Hampshire.

I'm not sure where Tom lives, but I know Nelly lives on the South Coast in Sussex. If I hear anything from them at all, I'll be sure to let you know.

Hi Sandra,
Thanks for getting up so early to reply to me! hope it has'nt played on your mind overnight?.

We were one of the first families to move onto KH estate at the end of the war, looking back it
was not one of Dad's best moves to choose a flat for us,but it probably pushed my sisters and I into achieving more for ourselves in latter life!
Came to Devon a few years ago and live on the edge of Dartmoor,it tends to rain quite a bit but we love it here.
Seen your posts about the Cherry Island Lee's, and I believe you are having some success
with linking up with past family members? makes for interesting research!
But where are my Lee's??
Best wishes Vic
